Special Thanks To "Denny's Place" of Brandywine MD

We have had many great contributions to the Wounded Warriors program and we appreciate them all.  But lately we received one that deserved recognition.
It is for $2500 from Jeff Sheriff who owns a local bar in Brandywine, MD called "DENNY'S PLACE" The bar consists mostly of Firefighters and Police and local men and women.  They had a fundraiser and raised $5000.  This year they decided to split the money between Charlotte Hall Veterans Home and the Emerald Society Wounded Warriors program.  A big THANK YOU to all that participated.

At l-36's meeting today, I was informed by Sec. James Gordon, that there are over 100 members of the RFA who have not paid their 2012 union dues. If you are one of those that has not paid his, or her, dues as of yet, please do so as soon as possible. Failure to pay may lead to your being dropped from L-36's rolls.

Thanks very much,

Marion D. Sanchez

President

Hello, I wanted to give you an update on my father, James C. (JC) Fleming, ret DCFD.  He was the pilot of the fireboats William T. Belt, Firefighter, and John Glen, Jr.  He was the pilot who brought the John Glen, Jr. down from New York.  Many who served on the fireboat from the late 50s to early 80s would remember him.  JC is 87, has Alzheimer's, and his health is failing. He is in the St. Mary's Nursing Home on Leonardtown, Md., in room 336 if anyone would like to visit.  Or anyone can call me or my sister, Darlene Heber for more information.

3-20-13  From Jim Thorne:   Subject: Treatment Update
As most all of you know I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late August of 2013.  I immediately started chemotherapy and it was very successful for about five months and then it stopped working.  My doctor had predicted this so it did not come as a surprise.  After that they tried a different chemotherapy for a couple of weeks but that one had side effects and didn't work out.  Yesterday I met with a doctor who is a good friend of my doctor who has an office near GW Hospital.  He is recommending a different type of chemotherapy, actually two types, and that will being tomorrow, two weeks on and 1 week off.  This also has side effects but they sound tolerable.  I will get the drugs administered in my doctor's office in Winchester.
Many thanks to all of you who have told me they have placed me on their prayer lists.  Also, thanks for the many E-mails I have received.  I'm still feeling good and just trying to be positive.

Jim Thorne

From Frank Tremel:

John E. Tippett

John (Singy's) right arm is still not moving, his leg is improving in that he can stand alone in therapy for minutes at a time--not yet walking.   He still has the feeding tube but is able to swallow some soft foods for the therapist.   His speech is improving in that he gets out sentences, names of people, at times.   He wants to go home and gets mad when the family takes him outside in the wheelchair, then brings him back to his room......he wants to get out!   The docs are considering this -- perhaps he might respond more at home?   Mike sees definite improvement in the weeks that we were in Florida and did not see him daily.   He is more interactive now.   The MRSA is cleared up.   He can have visitors, but they are trying not to crowd the room as that seems to agitate him.    Family are taking turns spending time with him during his awake, more alert hours.   He gets a lot of therapy which wears him out, but is helping him improve.   The medical people like for him to be stimulated........he talks non-stop, but most of it cannot yet be understood.    Has to be so frustrating for him.

I will update you as things change; thanks for inquiring.

From Jerry Spence:

Got a call from Tommy Dolen and he told me he has been in the hospital since last Thursday with an infection in his blood.  They have not identified what the cause is, but it must have hit him pretty hard.  He said when they took him in by ambulance his BP was 70 something over 40 something.. He will probably be kept in the Hospital for at least another week.  They were in Florida visiting Todd, his son, and Mary Ann for Christmas. Sounded weak and raspy. perhaps you can rally some of the Brothers in Florida to stop in to see him. He is not in ICU any longer. Phone number to room is 561-548-4209.
Jerry

I talked to him this morning and he sounded good. They are running more tests.
