2010 Fall Reunion

Saturday, September 25, 2010

The Retired Firefighters Association will hold the reunion at the same location as the past two years.  Tim Dowd, the owner of Circle D and the father of Tim, a DC Firefighter, has taken great care of us in the past, and I have every assurance that he will do so again this year.  Tim has assured me that this year we will have sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70’s.  So far, the crappy weather in Woodbine is the only valid complaint we have heard.  In the very unlikely event that Tim’s weather prognostications are in error, there is plenty of room under cover.

The Circle D Farm is located in Woodbine, MD right off of I-70 east of Frederick

(DCFD orange signs will be posted).  For those who don’t use Mapquest.com or have a GPS (I highly recommend Garmin), a beautiful map, courtesy of Doug Wheeler,

of the map

The reunion will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 12:00 until 6:00.  The menu will include hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, condiments, and dessert.  Sodas and beer are also included.  Food will be served from about 12:30 until 4:30.  There is no need to bring food, but if you want to bring your great-grandmother’s apple pecan cinnamon swirl cream cheese blond brownies, there will be tables that can be used for DESSERTS ONLY (please).

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

Since there will be a per-person charge, ALL people who plan to attend must pay in advance.  As we are all on fixed incomes, the cost will remain at $25 per person again this year, payable to RFA.

  Mail to:

 Sonny Mullikin

 408 Roland Rd

The Iowa State Fire Marshal has requested our assistance for the Iowa contingent that brings WWII veterans to Washington DC to see their memorial. I am sure many of you have heard of these "honor flights to DC". This is a special sanctioned Iowa State contingent much larger than most of these flights. In many cases this will be the last time that they will be present to honor their comrades who have paid the ultimate sacrifice before them. These WWII veterans will embark on a long day that begins around 2am and ends with their arrival home after 10 pm the same day.

The flights are scheduled for Tuesday, August 17th, and Thursday, August 19th. 2010.  We have asked that Fairfax County Firefighters provide the requested assistance on the 19th, and for DC Firefighters to cover the 17th. There are 2 flights, each carrying 300 WWII veterans. The first
flight is August 17th and the second August 19th. We unload on the tarmac
and since the plane is a 747 the stairs are equivalent to a 2 story staircase.
Most of the veterans can walk down and up the stairs but there will be some who will be carried in a special "stair chair", similar to those used by firefighters.   We would like to have someone positioned every 3 or 4 steps and also a couple 4 man crews for each stairs to carry when needed. There is
a fore and aft stairs so we would like to have 30 to 40 personnel if possible.
We will also have our other volunteers who will assist the veterans from the stairs to the buses.

The plane will arrive at 10am each day and depart at 9pm each day. Our
people can meet in the Cell Phone Waiting Area at Dulles Airport at 9am so they can be escorted on to the tarmac with the buses and other volunteers. We should have the veterans off loaded and on to the buses before 11am. For
the return trip each evening, we arrive back at Dulles around 6:30pm and will start to load onto the plane as soon possible. As soon as they are loaded, the volunteers will be escorted off the tarmac to return home.

There is limited parking available in the Cell Phone Waiting Area and we encourage car pooling. There will be placards available upon arrival for free parking as long as they last. Transportation out on to the tarmac will
be on the tour buses which will escorted by Dulles security.

We will be looking toward the police to be able to provide an escort to and from Dulles Airport on both days. Pending the running route, we will see if the Marine Division will be available to provide a display at the bridge
crossing.
If you are interested in helping either during the morning or evening,
or both, please contact DFC Bruce Faust (
bruce.faust@dc.gov) and let us know your availability. The uniform for the day is work uniform, with uniform shirt.

If you have any questions,
please contact DFC Bruce Faust at (202) 727-3298, or at

FOR YOUR INFORMATION & PRAYERS

From Jim Misenheimer:

This is a picture of our daughter Kim, she is with the 101st airborne, air assault and is stationed in Kandahar Afghanistan.  Since April of this year when her unit was deployed to Afghanistan they have  had over 100 killed.  She lost a  very close friend and another friend.   Please say a prayer for her and our troops.

Tim Wells ia at the Marilyn's Home for the Aged, 6625 Whitesburg Rd., Snow Hill, MD 21863,  410-651-2637.

Dennis Thomas gave me a DCFD shirt with Lt Wells on the shirt. He was proud to show the employees of the home his new shirt.

Since the location is located in the outer parts of Worcestor County, he does not receive many visitors. I am sure he would appreciate cards, etc.

Bill Haller, had knee replacement surgery July 8th. He is in Doctors Community Hospital, Lanham, MD
Andy Wade, had bi-past surgery
Preston Wheeler had a lobe from his lung removed NOT his entire lung. He does have a spot on his other lung and they do not know yet if he will have radiation or chemo. It is stage four. If anyone would like to learn more and follow his case they can go to www.caringbridge.org once on just type in his name. He sounds optimistic and from my experience that is very good. Keep him and his family in your prayers.   ED

Retired F/F Zimmerman Roberts still fighting the fight down in Florida.

Congratulations (again)

This photo was taken on the 22nd floor of the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee Florida on April 12.

Me on the left, Alex Sink, Florida State Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner & Fire Marshal in the center and Julius Halas, Director of the State Fire Marshals Office on the right.

I was given a resolution by the State and board on being named Florida Fire Inspector of the Year.  The next day the group met with the cabinets members for "congratulations" then I drove home.

My short 15 minutes of fame.
