NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

L-36's COPA Fund Drive is now in progress, and to make it a little easier to for members to donate, L-36 is offering, I believe for the first time, a great looking "L-36 Challenge Coin" for a donation of only $20.00 each. You can see what the coins look like in the 2011 Fall/Winter edition of the Capital City Fire Fighter on page's 40-41[Kenny Cox's picture is on the cover]. I will have some of the coins at our June meeting. You may also order online by going to L-36's web site at www.iaff36.org, by snail mail sent to Local-36 COPA Fund, 2120 Bladensburg Rd. NE Washington, D.C. [The Kenneth M. Cox Building], or by calling James Gordon at, 202-635-8500.

Thanks,

Marion D.[for Dale]

Hi Everyone,
Mike was discharged from Beebee Tuesday, 5/15 and boy was he glad to get home.  Nothing really resolved yet regarding treatment for the bone infection.  ID recommends having ortho remove the hardware in the left leg with bone culture before starting IV abx.  ID and ortho will be discussing the case and we have an appt with ortho on 5/21.  Long road ahead but we are trying to stay strong.  Prayers and support as always much appreciated.  Will keep everyone posted.  Love, Sharon Page

3-29-12  My son John McBride passed away Wednesday, March 28.  Our family thanks all of your list for your support during our time of grieving. There will be a Memorial Service for John on April 7th at 2 pm at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue Frederick, MD 21701.  Donations are appreciated in John McBride's name to the Hospice of Frederick County (Kline Hospice House Fund) 516 Trail Avenue, PO Box 1779 Frederick, MD 21701.

Mickey McBride

John McBride was assigned to E-25 for 22 years when he left the DCFD.

3-28-12  From Charlie K. Butler, Retired from E-25, concerning his son Kelly Butler who retired from T-10.

To the retired members who may have worked with Kelly Butler in the third and sixth battalions during the years between 1979 and 1992, this posting is to let the membership know how Kelly’s battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has progressed.  When Kelly retired from Truck 10 due to MS in 1992 he was still able to get around on his own and able to work at several jobs such as security at Southern MD Hospital, as a car salesman, a locksmith and other jobs that were not too physically demanding.  Over the years Kelly’s condition declined to the point that he was forced to be confined to a 24-hour, live-in facility.  Kelly was admitted to Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in LaPlata, MD in November 2007.

Since that time, Kelly’s condition has worsened to the point where his legs were contracted so tightly to his chest that he could no longer sit in a wheel chair.  In the fall of 2011 his doctors determined that in order for him to ever be able to be in a sitting position again he would require extreme surgery.  In December 2011 Kelly had surgery at Georgetown Hospital.

He is back at the Nursing Home and is recovering and will soon be able to leave his bed and be able to sit in a wheel chair for the first time in over two years.

Kelly would enjoy hearing from any of the firefighters he worked with during his time on the job. You can reach him by phone at 1-240-349-2943.  The address of the Nursing Home is Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 10200 LaPlata Road, LaPlata, MD 20646, Room 312.

A Special VIP Visits Squad 1 and Engine 2

April 30, 2011: Story & Photos By: Elliot J. Goodman

Members of Rescue Squad 1 and Engine 2 were honored by the visit of a real living legend when retired Deputy Fire Chief Harry Gates visited their quarters and had lunch.

Chief Gates spent some of his very best years at the squad, during his visit he told many great stories of the "Good Old Days". He served the DCFD from his probation year in 1950 at Engine 25 and retired as Deputy Fire Chief in 1979.

Chief Gates toured the station with Captain Ed Smith and other members, as well as another VIP in attendance, Kenny Cox. In his tour he even climbed up into the rear of the squad and that brought back memories of the old "McCaa" mask that used to be in the back.

A great job by the members of the R1 and E2 for hosting the event and to Local 36 Vice President Dabney Hudson for bringing him downtown.
